The government's decision to provide free education from KG to PG has sparked concerns among government-aided and private colleges, which depend heavily on students' admission fees for their day-to-day functioning. Institutions say that admission fees are used to meet essential expenses, including the purchase of teaching materials such as chalk and dusters, payment of salaries to teachers and staff, and settlement of utility expenses. Colleges have also pointed out that telephone, internet and electricity bills are largely paid from the revenue generated through admission fees. The development has raised questions over how these institutions will manage their finances if alternative funding support is not provided.
