Bhubaneswar Unit-IV market to undergo major revamp; separate fish and meat section planned

Odishagovernment announced plans to revamp the Unit-IV Market in Bhubaneswar on Friday. Separate sections for non-vegetarian products and vegetables will be made to improve hygiene and provide better facilities for traders.

Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra said the redevelopment would be carried out under a master plan, benefiting hundreds of traders operating in the market.

Separate Facilities For Traders

According to the Minister, the existing market infrastructure requires significant improvement, particularly in terms of cleanliness and organisation.

More than 300 non-vegetarian traders and over 400 vegetable traders are expected to benefit from the proposed restructuring.

The government plans to create separate spaces for fish and meat vendors, while retaining dedicated areas for vegetable traders as part of the redevelopment exercise.

Speaking about the proposal, Mahapatra said, “Unit-IV Market is a valuable place. However, the environment is not hygienic. We are planning to separate the fish and meat market to maintain hygiene. We are also planning to develop other markets and ensure a clean environment.”

Master Plan For New Market Complex

The Minister said a new market complex would be developed in accordance with a master plan aimed at improving facilities for traders and customers alike.

Mahapatra also announced that Panchadeva Market, which has remained closed for the past 25 years, would be revived.

Addressing the issue of the incomplete market complex, he said, “The government has made plans to complete the work soon. Investigation into the irregularities will also be made.”

The Minister further stated that alleged irregularities related to the market project would be investigated and action would be taken against those found responsible.
