Debashish Samantaray files Rajya Sabha nomination as BJP eyes stronger presence in Upper House
BJP candidate Debashish Samantaray filed his nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha by-election on Friday. Senior party leaders, MLAs and Chief Minister Mohan Majhi extended support ahead of the June 18 poll.
Samantaray arrived at the State BJP office before proceeding in a large procession to submit his nomination papers. Before filing the nomination, he held discussions with the State BJP leadership.
Debashish Samantaray quit BJD on May 25, 2026, citing that he felt he was “systematically belittled” in the party. He later joined BJP on May 26, 2026 in Delhi in a grand event.
Senior Leaders Attend Nomination Process
Several BJP MLAs were present at the State BJP headquarters during the nomination process. Chief Minister Mohan Majhi was also scheduled to be present as the party formally backed Samantaray’s candidature for the Upper House.
The Rajya Sabha by-election is scheduled to be held on June 18.
BJP Sees Political Advantage
Reacting to Samantaray’s nomination, Odisha BJP president Manmohan Samal said the party had become stronger following his induction.
Samal noted that Samantaray has considerable influence in coastal Odisha politics and said his entry into the BJP further strengthened the organisation.
He also indicated that discussions are ongoing with other political leaders interested in joining the party.
Party Expects Higher Representation
Speaking on the occasion, Manmohan Samal expressed confidence that the BJP’s strength in Parliament would increase.
“Definitely, our party would strengthen, and the number of MPs from our party would increase. After the elections in Madhya Pradesh, we will become the majority,” Samal said.
