OpenAI launches GPT-6 Cyber with ‘critical’ cybersecurity rating

OpenAI has further disclosed 304 critical Linux findings to maintainers, along with proposed patches.OpenAI has launched GPT-6 Cyber, a specialised artificial intelligence (AI) model designed to identify and exploit software vulnerabilities, assigning it a 'critical' cybersecurity rating under its safety framework.The model was released on Thursday to a limited group of vetted customers, as the company steps up efforts to equip cybersecurity researchers with advanced AI tools to detect and address vulnerabilities before they can be exploited by malicious actors.According to OpenAI, GPT-6 Cyber can help security researchers identify software weaknesses, assess how they could be exploited and develop fixes.The launch comes amid growing concerns over the potential misuse of increasingly capable AI systems for cyberattacks.OpenAI said its researchers used the model to identify 81 previously unknown vulnerabilities in Mozilla's Firefox browser, which were classified as high severity.

Mozilla has begun releasing fixes for the identified flaws.The model also helped develop working exploits for 948 Linux kernel vulnerabilities, including 588 that had not previously been identified, the company said.OpenAI has further disclosed 304 critical Linux findings to maintainers, along with proposed patches.The 'Critical' classification marks an escalation from the 'High' cybersecurity rating assigned to its predecessor, GPT-5.6 Cyber, under OpenAI's safety framework.The model's advanced capabilities have prompted the company to restrict its initial availability.

GPT-6 Cyber is currently accessible only to selected customers under Daybreak Red, OpenAI's programme for advanced and authorised cybersecurity work, including penetration testing and exploit development.OpenAI plans to expand access to all approved Daybreak Red customers over the coming weeks.The company has also made its earlier GPT-5.6 Cyber model available to all Daybreak Red customers.
