It runs identical software, but ships in a design with two-stage triggers, a bigger eight-inch IPS screen (1080p and up to 120Hz versus 800p and 90Hz in the Deck OLED), and its got double the RAM and storage (32GB and 1TB, respectively), not to mention a slightly faster processor in the Ryzen Z1 Extreme.

At $999.99, its current discounted price at Best Buy, its worth considering if youre deciding on a handheld.

The Legion Go S is not as powerful as the $1,299.99 Asus ROG Xbox Ally X20 that just launched, which has the Z2 Extreme and a OLED screen, but its no slouch, either.
[Product: Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS (Z1 Extreme) | https://bestbuy.7tiv.net/c/482924/614286/10014?u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bestbuy.com%2Fsite%2Flegion-go-s-8-120hz-gaming-handheld-amd-ryzen-z1-extreme-steamos-32gb-with-1tb-ssd-steam%2F6619188.p]
This model launched with Windows 11 and the Ryzen Z2 Go.

Despite being a newer chip, its less powerful than the Z1 Extreme in the discounted model.

SteamOS and the faster internals within this configuration will provide a better experience.

Check out my colleague Sean Hollisters review of multiple configs of the Go S, and see how it stacks up in his benchmarks.

While listing off his accomplishments, he mentioned his decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Ontario.
This is a much more powerful term.

I can do stuff thats unbelievable I called Google, Google Maps.

See, Google wouldnt have taken my call in the first term.

That would seem to contradict Googles statement on the matter, in which it said that it simply reflects official government sources, which is GNIS for the US These updates follow our long-standing policy for bodies of water with names that vary from country to country.
Throughout his second term, however, Silicon Valley including Google and its CEO Sundar Pichai has gone out of its way to try and ingratiate itself with President Trump, lavishing him with gifts, compliments, and donations to his pet projects.

Google did not immediately return a request for comment.

He stands stoically onstage, barely moving, as he seemingly effortlessly works through deft guitar solos and lopsided riffs.

Unfortunately, Mascis has developed a similar reputation as an interview subject, quietly sitting and offering deft nonanswers.

Thats not to say that Mascis cant be funny or charming.

As our interview was winding down and I was thanking him for his time, he started to loosen up a bit.

He told me about his youth as a mini golf enthusiast. I had a 3-foot putt for the win at a mini-golf tournament, he said, but thats when I realized that I was a choker When I was 11, I choked. And thats when he decided, I should maybe not do sports. So, instead of becoming a professional mini golfer, Mascis went on to form one of the most important bands in alternative rock.

While most of his contemporaries have called it quits or are just going through the motions onstage for a paycheck, the original lineup of Mascis, bassist Lou Barlow, and drummer Patrick Murphy are still regularly putting out new LPs of reliable rockers.

But Mascis says there isnt any grand secret to the bands longevity.

Over 40 years deep, he says, I guess we have nothing better to do.
What, for an interviewer, can come off as frustrating indifference might actually be the key to Mascis staying power for better or worse.

Creatively and professionally, his modus operandi seems to be rolling with the punches and not overthinking things.

For the new record There Near, he said, the band just didnt push it. There were no eight-hour marathon studio sessions.

They werent meticulously fine-tuning basslines or trading Logic sessions back and forth remotely.

Mascis would roll in with fully prepared demos and the band would immediately start recording, even as Barlow and Murph were still learning their parts, on the off chance that it comes together quickly.
The same sort of relaxed approach also informs Mascis gear choices.

He said, I am kind of a tube purist guy, but its just also kind of inconvenient sometimes, so he uses whatever works.

That means while he mixes and masters to tape, hes also tracking in Pro Tools.

When it comes to designing signature instruments with Fender, hes just as easygoing. I try to, you know, do the important things that I want, but not make it too complicated I think its better to keep it kind of cheap just so people can do what they want with it. The neck is his biggest concern, he said. Im a sucker for jumbo frets and, you know, if the neck is good and the frets and stuff, thats the main thing.

Most of the other stuff, you know, you can swap out if you want.
But that somewhat lackadaisical attitude has also caught him some heat.

Two years ago, Mascis released a video for his solo track Old Friends that was made using generative AI.

Speaking with The Verge, he finally publicly addressed the controversy. Yeah, just some kid did it, he said. I thought it looked cool, so Yeah, thats dipping my toes into the...

I dont do much with videos. He trailed off repeatedly while answering before finally admitting, But yeah, I guess thats a slippery slope.
Similarly, he said that while he doesnt believe there is a place for AI in music making, we have to acknowledge that its here whether we like it or not, and I guess were learning how to deal with it.

And hopefully it wont kill us all.
About the only thing that Mascis could muster strong feelings about was the bands infamously loud live shows. (Dinosaur Jr.s recent performance at the tiny Babys All Right is what finally convinced me to start packing earplugs.) I noticed the audience too seems more desperate for something kind of reality-based, he said, letting a touch of his purist heart show. We dont have in-ear monitors or click tracks.

We have amps and you know, just, I think some people are responding to the reality of it.

Like they really need something thats not, you know, computer-generated or something.
He bemoaned the lack of amps onstage (Mascis plays in front of three full stacks, even in a 280-person-capacity club) and the reliance on high-tech front-of-house setups. Its very weird.

Now, soundmen create the sound instead of capture the sound, he said.

Of course, his recognition of the visceral power of live music and directly connecting with an audience makes his indifference to AI all the more baffling.

Dinosaur Jr. are currently touring the US behind There Near, which is out now.

The teacher, after all, was always turned around writing at the chalkboard!

But then came a bit of technology, previously mostly used for military purposes, called the overhead projector.

It would change far more than just the disciplinary record of students everywhere.

In this episode of Version History, we tell the story of the overhead projector.

David Pierce is joined by The Verges Jake Kastrenakes and Stanford professor Antero Garcia to discuss how overhead projectors were developed, how they made their way into classrooms, and how they changed so much about the way kids learn.

They also try to figure out why overhead projectors have mostly gone away, and whether the things that replaced them from PowerPoint presentations to computer screens to those new-fangled smart boards actually improved on the OHP.

This is the final episode of the fifth season of Version History, all about the most iconic school tech.

Thanks so much for watching, listening, sending feedback, and everything else!

Other than the OHP, we also spent this season looking at Oregon Trail, the original Chromebook, the One Laptop Per Child program, the LeapFrog LeapPad, and those ubiquitous Texas Instruments calculators.

Down the street from my hotel, there was this little coffee shop Stagger that is, I think, best known for its matcha, which is good.

But the drink I unexpectedly found myself obsessed with was their cream top, an iced Americano with, yep, vanilla cream on top.

When I got back to Oakland, I kept thinking about how badly I wanted one.

For more than 20 years, Ive been drinking my coffee iced or otherwise black.

Originally this was because I knew I could put black coffee that had cooled off in the microwave to reheat it without worrying that the milk in it would curdle. (Gross, I know.) Then, as I started drinking better coffee, it felt like the best way to appreciate the expensive beans I was buying.

So my attachment to the cream top surprised me.

And then, when Oakland had a gnarly heat wave in March, I decided there was one way Id tolerate it: fancy coffee drinks.

I splashed out $14 for the Zulay Kitchen frother and I was off.

A handheld foamer looks and works kinda like an immersion blender.

I pour milk into a glass, stick the frother in there, and then hold the power button until it reaches my preferred consistency.

When the disposable batteries it uses are fresh, this takes about 30 seconds to a minute.

As the batteries degrade, it takes longer; if Im getting impatient about how long its taking me to make my frothy treats, its time to change the batteries.

The frother also works to beat eggs, mix protein powder or creatine into a drink, and make hot chocolate.

But by far its gotten the most use making my coffee drinks as I set out to make a cream top of my own.
[Image: Also I think its neat to watch the foam descend into the coffee. https://platform.theverge.com/wp-content/uploads/sites/2/2026/10/E16BF163-4057-4543-9FFE-E730462F0473_1_105_c.jpeg?quality=90&strip=all]
The cream top descended from the Einspänner, an espresso drink thats named for a one-horse carriage.

The original Viennese version used hot espresso, and the whipped cream on top served as a kind of insulation, which kept the drivers drinks hot for them when they were out in the cold. (Obviously, its popularity expanded beyond carriage drivers.) It isnt clear to me how the Einspänner made it to South Korea, but it exploded in popularity there, with all kinds of variations, mostly iced.

And then from South Korea, it made its way to the US, where the ground had already been cleared by Starbucks cold foam drinks.

The notable thing about the cream top, besides the addition of delicious fat and sugar to coffee, was that the cream wasnt as light as latte foam, but wasnt as heavy as ordinary whipped cream.

It was melty and dripped slowly into the coffee.

My first experiments with my at-home cream top were pretty simple.

I dont have an espresso machine, but I do make concentrated cold brew in hot weather, which has a strong enough flavor to stand up against the foam. (Some recipes suggest powdered espresso if you dont want to use concentrated cold brew.)
After I mastered the simple cream top, I began making forays into weirder breakfast treats, my favorite of which I recreated from a Starbucks ad.

Its a cold brew with coconut ube cold foam, the top of which I dust with toasted coconut flakes.

It is dank. (This is a recipe for a more sophisticated version than I make.) So when it was 90 degrees in Oakland for about two weeks running recently, this drink was how I consoled myself.

To be honest, Im just recommending getting a frother.

You can spend a lot on a milk frother and some people do.

I relied on Americas Test Kitchen to steer me in the right direction but outlets like Wirecutter and Bon Appétit have their own preferred options.

This one is cheap and simple, and its been treating me right.

Im sure the Apple HomeView is nice, too, but in pleasure per dollar can it match a $14 cold foamer that takes AA batteries?

I have my doubts.

For more on autonomous vehicles, policy, and road rules, follow Andrew J.

Hawkins.

The Stepback arrives in our subscribers inboxes at 8AM ET.

Opt in for The Stepback here.

How it started
The first state to pass a law legalizing self-driving cars operating on public roads was Nevada in June 2011 long before such vehicles were operating on public roads.

This was three years before the introduction of Teslas Autopilot, five years before Waymo spun out of the Google self-driving car project, and seven years before the first commercial robotaxi service got underway (in Arizona, not Nevada).

Nevada was ahead of the curve primarily due to lobbying: Google saw Nevada as prime testing ground for its prototypes, so it urged lawmakers to pass the law that allowed it to do so.

The legislation even included a provision exempting drivers from text-messaging bans while the automated system was engaged.

Back then, many states and cities welcomed self-driving cars with open arms, eager to be seen as future-forward and pro-innovation.

They had no inkling that over a decade later, they would be back at the drafting table crafting legislation to rein in these same self-driving cars.

While federal regulators scramble to establish safety standards, legislation that would establish rules for autonomous vehicles remains stalled in Congress and has been for years.

Washingtons paralysis has left local lawmakers to create their own playbooks to ensure robot cars at least follow some rules of the road.

The result is a patchwork of rules and regulations for robotaxi operators to follow an outcome that many industry leaders were desperate to avoid.

And as robotaxis continue to spread to new cities, local officials are discovering more unintended consequences of their new robot residents, leading to even more rules and an ever-growing patchwork of complexity for operators.

How its going
Municipalities generally lack authority over vehicle manufacturing standards, but they hold broad authority over street operations.

As such, theyve been using that authority to pass their own laws governing the rollout of robotaxis.

Theres not an exact count of the number of local regulations and ordinances that have been passed since robotaxis have gone mainstream.

But in the absence of any federal rules, cities and states have been flexing their authority in an effort to bring order to some of the chaos.

Minneapolis is considering an ordinance to require human monitors inside autonomous vehicles, which would effectively ban driverless operations.

The San Diego City Council passed a resolution seeking to block Waymo from the airport and give local agencies direct control over AVs in emergencies.

And Austin firefighters have expressed concern over the Tesla Cybercabs lack of steering wheel or pedals, which they argue could lead to issues if first responders need to move a stalled vehicle.

They want to require AV developers to establish dedicated, rapid-response towing protocols and direct human operator communications for emergency situations.

Its not just cities or blue states taking a harder line, either the pushback is blurring traditional political lines.

It used to be the case that Republicans were seen as more welcoming of autonomous vehicles, while Democrats were seen as more skeptical.

This has certainly borne out in a handful of Democrat-led cities New York City, Chicago, Washington, DC  that still havent legalized driverless cars.

But now even some red states are considering tightening the leash, including Kentucky, Oklahoma, South Dakota, and Iowa.

Even in tech-friendly California, state lawmakers are mulling ways to bring robotaxis to heel.

Several bills have been introduced to give cities direct authority to limit AV fleet sizes, restrict operating hours, or enact local permit bans within municipal limits.

Additionally, emergency protocols were drafted to require AV companies to give local police and fire departments physical override access or emergency remote shut-off mechanisms.

Some municipalities are flexing their land-use and zoning powers to crack down on robot cars.

Culver City explored emergency moratoriums on building permits for AV fleet facilities, while Santa Monica used local noise and traffic ordinances to restrict 24-hour charging hubs.

It would seem that even robotaxis arent immune to NIMBY complaints.

What happens next
As the local debate over autonomous vehicles intensifies, AV developers are increasingly looking overseas as a potential hedge to more obstacles in cropping up in the US.

Waymo is planning to expand its service in London, Tokyo, and Munich.

Uber is teeing up vehicles for Manchester, Madrid, and Dubai.

If the US is getting too complex and over-regulated, perhaps they can find friendlier reception elsewhere.

Still, the US presents the industrys best chances of turning a profit, especially as costs for developers continue to grow.

Rather than fighting strict local regulations head-on, companies like Waymo, Zoox, and Aurora are prioritizing states with explicit legislative preemption that prevents individual cities from banning the technology.

And at the national level, industry trade groups like the Autonomous Vehicle Industry Association are aggressively pushing for more preemption powers in an attempt to create more unified standards.

Congress may eventually get around to passing high-level safety legislation, but its highly unlikely that any bill passed at the federal level would seek to strip cities of their core police, zoning, and emergency response powers.

States will also have a say, and sometimes that may complement or conflict with their own cities.

Even airport authorities are getting in on the action, proposing their own slate of rules for robotaxis.

AV companies would be well advised to get used to the patchwork its not going anywhere.

By the way
* Even if the feds pass a sweeping national framework, like the proposed SELF DRIVE Act, cities and states would still keep their authority over local road usage.

In other words, cities are going to be the main arbiters of robotaxi permission for the foreseeable future.
* Texas may be the Wild West, with fewer rules governing self-driving cars than most states, but California is still the gold standard.

Securing a deployment permit from the California Public Utilities Commission, for example, is viewed by the industry as a definitive safety validation.

Read this
* Streetsblog reports that Uber and Waymo have spent more than $15 million on lobbying state officials in New York.
* Tesla had to change the name of its Full Self-Driving software to Assisted Driving to win approval from European Union regulators, Reuters reports.
* Tesla provided first responders in Austin three days of training and emergency guidebooks on how to interact with its Cybercabs, according to The Daily Texan.
