India marks 51 years since the Emergency was imposed on June 25, 1975, by the government led by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. The proclamation, announced through All India Radio and approved by President Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, led to the suspension of several fundamental rights, restrictions on press freedom, and the arrest of opposition leaders across the country. Prominent leaders including Jayaprakash Narayan, Morarji Desai, and others were jailed during the period. Lasting for nearly 21 months, the Emergency remains one of the most debated and controversial phases in India's democratic history.
