The Supreme Court of India, led by Chief Justice Surya Kant, made strong observations while referring to the alleged AK-47 firing on protesters in Bihar and the police lathi charge on students in Delhi. The Court stated that peaceful protest is a constitutional right and clarified that police cannot resort to baton charge merely because a protest is taking place. At the same time, the apex court also observed that violent attacks on police personnel in the name of protest are equally unacceptable, stressing that both law enforcement and demonstrators must act within the bounds of the law.
