Heavy rainfall in the upper catchment of the Baitarani River has triggered concerns of flooding in Odisha, with the Water Resources Department warning of a minor flood in low-lying areas. Officials said the river is expected to cross the danger mark after 4 PM, while Jajpur district is likely to be the worst affected due to heavy rainfall in the middle basin. A small to moderate flood is expected in Jajpur, Akhuapada and Bhadrak within the next 24 hours. Meanwhile, rainfall in July has already surpassed the monthly average, and water inflow into the Hirakud Dam continues to rise. Chief Engineer Dilip Kumar Rout said the decision on opening the dam gates will be taken after reviewing the situation on the following day.
