According to popular belief, Lord Jagannath is an incarnation of Lord Krishna, who is believed to have left his mortal body after being struck by an arrow shot by Jara Sabara while near a Siali creeper during the Dwapara Yuga. This belief forms the basis of the sacred tradition.
