Illegal sand mining from riverbeds is allegedly weakening river embankments across Odisha, resulting in embankment breaches and allowing floodwaters to inundate nearby habitations. According to environmentalists, excessive extraction of sand is disrupting the natural balance of rivers and affecting the normal flow of water.
