Rourkela’s EV Bus Terminal project falters amid administrative impasse
As electric vehicles (EVs) gain popularity worldwide amid rising fuel prices and growing environmental concerns, the delayed construction of Rourkela’s proposed EV bus terminal in Sundargarh district has become a matter of concern for residents, sources said on Wednesday.

The project, envisioned as a key component of the Smart City’s sustainable transport network, has been under construction since 2023 but is yet to be completed.
The EV bus terminal was planned to facilitate the introduction of around 100 electric buses in the city, providing cleaner and more efficient public transport while reducing pollution levels. Residents had hoped that the project would improve connectivity and address transportation gaps in areas where existing bus services remain limited.
Although Rourkela has witnessed significant urban development under the Smart City mission, public transport challenges continue to persist. The city currently operates the Ama Bus services, but many localities remain outside the network. Citizens believe the addition of electric buses could enhance accessibility and offer a greener alternative to conventional fuel-powered vehicles.
The project has also faced several hurdles. Construction work reportedly slowed down over the past few months, and controversy arose earlier over the dumping of large quantities of fly ash at the site, drawing objections from local residents. While work has resumed, progress continues at a slow pace.
Officials maintain that the project will be completed. The Chairman of the District Planning Board has expressed confidence that the terminal will be operational in due course, while the District Collector has said the administration is closely monitoring the project and efforts are being made to expedite the remaining work.
However, with no definitive completion date announced, residents remain eager for clarity on when the long-awaited EV bus terminal and expanded electric bus services will finally become a reality.
“Just as there are current transportation issues, EV buses will provide a solution. The State government is working diligently toward this. However, some time ago, due to disputes and protests from local residents regarding the work, the progress had slowed down. This will be rectified, the work will be fast-tracked, and people will soon be able to use the EV terminal,” Chairman of the District Planning Board, Durga Charan Tanti, said.
