A fascinating prehistoric discovery has emerged from Baripada in Odisha's Mayurbhanj district, where fossils believed to belong to the giant shark Megalodon have been identified. Estimated to be around 15 million years old and dating back to the Miocene Epoch, the fossils suggest that the present-day Baripada region may once have been submerged under a vast sea.
The fossils were discovered by Dr. Debabrata Nandi, Assistant Professor in the Department of Remote Sensing and GIS at Odisha University. According to preliminary observations, the findings include shark teeth, vertebral elements and other fossilised remains believed to belong to a giant shark species.
Some of the recovered materials are yet to be identified. The discovery has sparked fresh interest in Odisha's prehistoric past and could provide significant insights into the region's ancient geological history.
