China is planning a new China-Myanmar-Bangladesh Economic Corridor (CMBC) that would connect Kunming in Yunnan province to the Bay of Bengal through Mandalay, Yangon, Kyaukpyu, Chattogram and Cox's Bazar. According to the source, the proposal received formal support from Chinese President Xi Jinping during the recent Beijing visit of Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. The project is proposed under China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) as a multimodal transport and economic corridor. The source says the corridor, along with Chinese-backed projects in Bangladesh, could increase China's strategic and economic presence near India's sensitive Siliguri Corridor, also known as the Chicken's Neck, and is being viewed as part of a broader regional connectivity and influence strategy.
